About Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home
Located in The Shires of Vermont, Hildene was the seasonal residence of Robert Lincoln and his wife Mary. Mr. Lincoln was the only child of President Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln to survive to adulthood. Between 1905, when they moved in, and the death of their granddaughter Mary Lincoln Beckwith in 1975, more Lincolns (three successive generations) lived at Hildene than at any other place in the world. In 1978, the non-profit Friends of Hildene purchased and preserved the estate which is open to the public year-round.
The estate sits on 412 acres of woods, meadows, gardens, farmland, and wetland. It includes 14 historic buildings, and 10 additional structures to support education, functions, guest amenities, exhibits, cheesemaking at Hildene Farm Goat Dairy and agriculture at Dene Farm.
Our goal is to be excellent. Hildene’s mission is Values into Action. Our mission advances our core values of integrity, perseverance and civic responsibility with a focus on keys actions: sustainability, land conservation, historic preservation, and civil civic discourse.
